August 4, 2018

More than 20 students representing 10 colleges from Chennai participated.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated from August 1 – 7th every year. The theme for 2018 World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is "Breastfeeding is a universal solution that levels the playing field, giving everyone a fair starts in life. It improves the health, wellbeing and survival of women and children around the world”

Breastfeeding is a universal solution that levels the playing field, giving everyone a fair starts in life. It improves the health, wellbeing and survival of women and children around the world. It helps to space children, reduces the risk of ovarian cancer and breast cancer, increases family and national resources, is a secure way of feeding and is safe for the environment

Breast milk is the natural first food for babies, provides all the energy and nutrients for the infants for the first months of life, and it continues to provide up to half or more of a child’s nutritional needs during the second half of the first year, and up to one-third during the second year of life

 Breast milk promotes -

  • Sensory and cognitive development,
  • Protects the infant against infectious and chronic diseases.
  • Exclusive breastfeeding reduces infant mortality due to common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea or pneumonia, and helps for a quicker recovery during illness.

 THE CONTEST

In India, traditionally special foods are given during lactation to augment breast milk. Each community follow a different pattern. As slowly traditional practices are replaced by commercial supplements, we would like to bring out the traditional recipes for the benefit of public before it is fully replaced by supplements.

IFTR conducted a “TRADITIONAL LACTATION RECIPE CONTEST” On August 4,2018. Students from different colleges and housewives participated in the contest and displayed different traditional preparations and explain the recipe to the participants.
